About

Beyond her work as a violinist, Dr. Geunyoung Kim is deeply passionate about teaching in a wide range of ensemble and sectional coaching settings. As a Michigan State University String Fellow during the 2022–2023 academic year, she had the valuable opportunity to connect with and learn from educators in colleges and public schools across the state. Through observing and coaching student orchestras throughout Michigan—including Okemos High School, Chippewa Middle School, St. Johns High School, Waverly High School, and the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony Orchestra—Kim refined her strategies for group instruction and ensemble coaching, strengthening her pedagogical approach.

In addition to her teaching, Kim has served as an adjudicator for notable competitions, including the Maryland State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA) Baroque Music Competition for string instruments (2026) and the Expression Music Academy’s North American Music Competition in Novi, MI (2022).

Since 2011, Kim has maintained a private violin studio, teaching students of all ages—from young beginners as early as age three to adults, including arts high school students and online homeschool musicians. Many of her students have earned awards in competitions and have been accepted into youth orchestras through successful auditions. Kim regularly organizes studio recitals and outreach concerts to share music with the broader community. Her teaching emphasizes strong foundational technique alongside expressive and engaging musicianship. She is deeply committed to each student’s individual growth, helping them build confidence and reach their full musical potential. With a supportive and motivating approach, Kim encourages students to develop consistent practice habits that become a natural and enjoyable part of their daily lives.

As a music teacher at Spring Vale Christian School (K–10) and St. Paul Catholic School (K–6) in Owosso, Michigan, Kim teaches general music, violin, and directs end-of-semester music concerts. In general music for K–1 students, she incorporates Kodály, Orff, and Dalcroze Eurhythmics approaches, guiding children to explore music through singing, movement, and percussion while supporting their growth and self-expression. In violin classes, Kim focuses on building strong technique with a proper bow hold and solid left-hand foundation, while keeping lessons enjoyable and engaging.

In High School Music Appreciation at Spring Vale, Kim engages pre-college students with music history from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Students explore concepts through listening journals, discussions, quizzes, and live violin demonstrations, fostering both understanding and appreciation of the depth and beauty of music.

Kim has passed the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in 2026, and is currently enrolled in an education certificate program. In 2024, she completed the Suzuki pedagogical training course Every Child Can! (ECC!) to further develop her teaching skills and gain a deeper understanding of her students.

Geunyoung is currently the concertmaster of the Lapeer Symphony Orchestra and a violinist with the Midland Symphony Orchestra. She is actively developing her career as a performer while serving as a violin instructor at Michigan State University Community Music School in East Lansing, MI, and a music teacher at St. Paul Catholic School, and Spring Vale Christian School in Owosso, MI, where she fosters young musicians.
